April 9th, 2014 by Dave Griffith, executive director Heart of Missouri Chapter Scott Caswell, chief executive officer Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region in News

Dear Editor:

The American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter and the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region are celebrating their volunteers and the work they do in the community during National Volunteer Week, observed through Saturday.

Last year, our chapter volunteers provided food, shelter, comfort and hope to 706 youths and adults who faced home fires and other disaster situations. They trained 9,390 people in lifesaving skills and delivered 770 emergency messages between military members and their families. Volunteers also provided assistance to military veterans.

Volunteers helped collect 42,500 units of blood and platelets from donors in the Mid-Missouri area.

We want to invite the public to sign up to volunteer and be a part of our lifesaving work. The Red Cross is looking for diverse volunteers of all ages and skill levels. Go to to learn more about volunteering with us and how to submit a volunteer application.

Anyone interested can also call chapter headquarters, toll free, at 1-866-815-2738.
