Your Opinion: Red Cross celebrates volunteers

Dear Editor:

The American Red Cross Heart of Missouri Chapter and the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region are celebrating their volunteers and the work they do in the community during National Volunteer Week, observed through Saturday.

Last year, our chapter volunteers provided food, shelter, comfort and hope to 706 youths and adults who faced home fires and other disaster situations. They trained 9,390 people in lifesaving skills and delivered 770 emergency messages between military members and their families. Volunteers also provided assistance to military veterans.

Volunteers helped collect 42,500 units of blood and platelets from donors in the Mid-Missouri area.

We want to invite the public to sign up to volunteer and be a part of our lifesaving work. The Red Cross is looking for diverse volunteers of all ages and skill levels. Go to www.redcross.org/hom to learn more about volunteering with us and how to submit a volunteer application.

Anyone interested can also call chapter headquarters, toll free, at 1-866-815-2738.

Schedule an appointment to donate blood by visiting redcrossblood.org. Donors can also call 1-800-RED CROSS, the Jefferson City Blood Donation Center at 1-573-635-9882 or the Columbia center at 573-449-2656.

If you want to volunteer to help when a disaster strikes our community, download the Team Red Cross app. You'll receive notifications when Red Cross volunteers are needed in the area. The app can be found in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store by searching for American Red Cross or by going to redcross.org/mobileapps.

We want to extend our sincerest thanks to the local Red Cross volunteers who help us fulfill our mission 365 days a year, 24 hours a day in Mid-Missouri and beyond.
