Mo. lawmakers enact local government bill

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri lawmakers have overridden the governor's veto of a bill intended to safeguard county budgets from some clerical errors.

There was little debate Wednesday as House and Senate members gave the two-thirds majority needed to override Gov. Jay Nixon's veto of the local government bill.

Rep. Mike Kelley, a Republican from Lamar, said his legislation was spurred by a clerical error in Dade County that listed the wrong property tax levy on documents submitted to the state auditor. Because of that, he said there's uncertainty about whether the county can legally collect its full taxes.

The bill allows officials to submit amended tax levy documents to fix clerical errors.

Nixon had vetoed the bill because of a separate provision allowing an annexation without an election in the Kansas City area.

Local government bill is HB1035.
