Jays move up spot in state football poll

The Jefferson City Jays climbed one spot while the other four area squads maintained their positions in the Missouri media high school football poll released this morning.

The Jays (2-0) are now No. 8 in Class 6 after defeating Belleville (Ill.) East 22-14 on Friday night at Adkins Stadium.

Two area squads - Helias (1-1) in Class 4 and California (2-0) in Class 3 - are ranked third.

The South Callaway Bulldogs (2-0) remain No. 4 in Class 2, while the Camdenton Lakers (2-0) are No. 5 in Class 5.

Two area teams - Blair Oaks (1-1) in Class 2 and Eldon in Class 3 (1-1) - are receiving votes in their respective divisions.

The No. 1 teams in each class are the same this week.

Blue Springs (Class 6), Lee's Summit West (Class 5), Maryville (Class 3) and Lamar (Class 2) are all unanimous selections.

Hamilton received 10 first-place votes to stay in the Class 1 top spot, with Valle Catholic getting the other five first-place votes.

In Class 4, Webb City stayed at No. 1 despite its 42-35 loss Friday night to Har-Ber (Ark.) in Springdale, Ark. Webb City, which had a 91-game regular-season winning streak snapped, received 12 of the 15 first-place votes. Harrisonville, which defeated Helias 22-21 to open the season at Adkins Stadium, got the other three.

The News Tribune, one of the media outlets to vote in the poll, voted for Webb City at No. 1.
