Red Skye Wireless, which bought Mid-America Wireless' 10 locations at the beginning of this year, closed its Jefferson City location after just six months.
A sign on the door of the authorized AT&T retailer referred customers to the AT&T store at Wildwood Crossings or to the Red Skye location in Columbia. No reason was given for the closure, and spokesmen for Red Skye and AT&T couldn't be reached for comment.
Gary Wilbers sold his Mid-America Wireless business to Red Skye after 22 years, saying it was time to move into different business interests.
"We've watched the industry grow from the first mobile-car phone to today where almost everyone has a wireless phone. The industry has been very good to me and my family," he said in a statement last December.
Although he sold the business, he leased the former Mid-America Wireless building in Jefferson City to Red Skye.
Now, he's looking to lease or sell that building, located across from Arby's on South Ten Mile Drive. The asking price for the 6,740-square-foot building is $1.174 million. It sits on 1.4 acres and is zoned C2 general commercial.
Wilbers said Red Skye has closed the Jefferson City and Rolla locations that it bought from him, but has kept the other eight open.
Wilbers now runs Spyder Technologies, an authorized Dish Network retailer, and Ascend Business Strategies, a training/consulting company that teaches leadership development for corporate employees as well as personal development.
