Lady Jays tennis topples Hickman

The Jefferson City Lady Jays had to wait a little longer than they wanted, but they got what they came for against Hickman.

In the new school year, Hickman does not get out of class until 4 p.m. And that's when Tuesday's dual against Jefferson City was slated to start at Washington Park.

When it got underway more than an hour later than scheduled, the Lady Jays posted an 8-1 victory.

The Lady Jays won five of the six singles matches - Kelly Raithel (10-6), Paige Smith (10-1), Eden Hoogveld (10-3), Kirsten Schmidt (10-4) and Athira Nambiar (10-2). Haley Snellen rallied from a 7-3 deficit for Jefferson City before falling 12-10.

Jefferson City won the three doubles matches. The team of Smith and Hoogveld won 10-0, while Raithel and Schmidt were 10-4 winners. Nambiar and Snellen won 10-3.

The Lady Jays varsity will travel Thursday to Kickapoo, while the Jefferson City junior varsity will play the Waynesville varsity at Waynesville.
