Area football capsules for first-round district playoff games

Here are area high school football preview capsules for Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013.

Missouri Military Academy at California

Expect a case of deja vu.

Top-seeded California opens the Class 3 District 6 Tournament with the same opponent it crushed to start last season's playoffs. The Pintos host the Missouri Military Academy at 7 p.m. today.

California, ranked fifth in Class 3, won last season's meeting 71-0. It looks like it could be more of the same this time around.

California (8-1) owns wins against Boonville, Mexico, Eldon, Hallsville, Southern Boone, Osage, Warsaw and Versailles. The lone loss is to Blair Oaks.

MMA (0-8) has lost to Van-Far, Winfield, Grandview, Principia, Kansas City Central, Father Tolton, Lutheran: St. Peters and St. Paul Lutheran.

Lutheran: St. Peters at South Callaway

Not many teams go 8-1 and get relegated to the No. 2 seed.

That's the case for South Callaway, as the Bulldogs sit behind Blair Oaks in the Class 2 District 6 Tournament. The Bulldogs open play at 7 p.m. today against seventh-seeded Lutheran: St. Peters.

A district title game between South Callaway and Blair Oaks looks likely, but first the Bulldogs have to take care of business.

South Callaway, ranked sixth in Class 2, owns wins against North Callaway, Crystal City, Scotland County, Hermann, Tipton, Cuba, Father Tolton and Montgomery County. The lone loss is to Battle.

Lutheran: St. Peters (2-7) has wins against John F. Kennedy and Missouri Military Academy, with the losses against Principia, Bishop DuBourg, St. Mary's, Living Word Christian, Trinity Catholic, Cardinal Ritter and Orchard Farm.

Tipton at Sacred Heart

Tipton hopes the rematch turns out a little better.

No. 4 seed Sedalia Sacred Heart bested No. 5 Tipton by 39 points in the season opener. Now the teams meet in the first round of the Class 1 District 4 Tournament at 7 p.m. today.

Tipton (4-5) owns wins against Windsor, Father Tolton, Butler and Archie, with the other losses to North Callaway, South Callaway, Cole Camp and Skyline.

Sacred Heart (6-2) has other wins against Summit Christian Academy, Slater, Windsor, Rich Hill and Father Tolton, with losses to Cole Camp and University Academy Charter.

Eldon at Versailles

Eldon is at the top of the pack.

The top-seeded Mustangs will face Versailles at 7 p.m. today in the first round of the Class 3 District 3 Tournament. While Eldon is the No. 1 seed, the game has been moved to Versailles because of field conditions.

The Tri-County Converence rivals met earlier this season, with Eldon rolling to a 56-0 victory.

Eldon (6-3) possesses additional wins over Buffalo, Warsaw, Osage, Hallsville and Southern Boone. The Mustangs' losses are to Miller Career Academy, California, and Blair Oaks.

Versailles (0-9) also has defeats against Knob Noster, Fulton, Warsaw, Osage, Hallsville, Southern Boone, Blair Oaks and California.

Diamond at Warsaw

Anything from here is icing on the cake for Warsaw.

After winning just two games in 2012, fourth-seeded Warsaw (4-5) hosts fifth-seeded Diamond (4-5) at 7 p.m. today in the Class 2 District 4 Tournament.

The defending state-champion Lamar Tigers will more than likely await the winner in the district semifinals.

Warsaw owns wins against Clinton, Cole Camp, Versailles and Southern Boone, with losses to Eldon, Hallsville, Blair Oaks, California and Osage.

Diamond has defeated Liberal, Miller, McAuley Catholic and Greenfield, while falling to Sarcoxie, Ash Grove, Pierce City, Lockwood and Jasper.

Hallsville at Hermann

Hallsville looks to pull the upset.

Fifth-seeded Hallsville travels to fourth-seeded Hermann at 7 p.m. today in the Class 2 District 6 Tournament.

The winner likely gets Blair Oaks.

Hallsville (6-3) owns wins against Fayette, Paris, Warsaw, Versailles, Osage and Southern Boone, with losses to Blair Oaks, California and Eldon.

Hermann (5-4) beat Cuba, St. James, Owensville, St. Clair and Pacific, while losing to Montgomery County, South Callaway, Sullivan and Union.

School of the Osage at Salem

School of the Osage hopes to keep the momentum going.

Osage broke a four-game losing streak with a win against Warsaw last week. Now the fifth-seeded Indians hope to upset fourth-seeded Salem at 7 p.m. today in the first round of Class 3 District 3 Tournament action.

Osage (3-6) also defeated Southern Boone and Versailles, with losses to Fulton, Moberly, Blair Oaks, Eldon, California and Hallsville.

Salem (4-5) beat Houston, Plattsburg, Owensville and Cabool, with losses to Thayer, Willow Springs, Mountain Grove, Ava and Liberty.

Southern Boone at Centralia

The task is tough as seventh-seeded Southern Boone travels to take on second-seeded Centralia at 7 p.m. today in Class 3 District 6 Tournament play.

Southern Boone (2-7) beat Father Tolton and Versailles, with losses to Kirksville, Osage, Blair Oaks, California, Warsaw, Eldon and Hallsville.

Centralia (8-1) defeated Highland, Mark Twain, South Shelby, Brookfield, Monroe City, Clark County, Louisiana and Macon, with the lone loss to Palmyra.

California is the top seed in the district.
