Dowden 1-2 at state tennis

San Francisco left-hander Randy Johnson worked six innings, needing only 78 pitches, to earn his 300th victory Thursday afternoon before a small and damp crowd in Washington. Johnson had to wait for his milestone victory. The game was rained out Wednesday night, and there was a 36-minute delay Thursday.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Ashley Dowden of Helias finished 1-2 in the Class 2 state singles tournament that concluded Saturday at the Cooper Tennis Complex.

Dowden opened with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Maranda Ann Miller of Webb City. In the quarterfinals, Dowden fell 3-6, 4-6 to defending state champion Risa Takenaka of Francis Howell North.

Dowden, who finished 25-2 this season, then lost 3-6, 4-6 to Adele Royal of Park Hill South.
