Thompson leads area foursome in Class 2

NEW BLOOMFIELD - Some area golfers have put themselves in position to capture all-state honors, now they just need a strong second-day effort to seal the deal.

Two members each from the Jefferson City and Helias girls golf teams started the Class 2 state championship Monday at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club.

After the first day, Jefferson City's Brooke Thompson heads the group, as she's in perfect position for earning all-state recognition, which goes to the top 15 finishers. She's currently sitting in a tie for that 15th spot after carding an 83 on the par-72 layout.

Parkway West's Emily Goldenstein and Springfield Glendale's Sun Jung are tied for first after posting 76s.

Among other area competiors, Helias' Jenna Kosmatka posted an 85 to tie for 18th, Jefferson City's Hope Watson was one shot back at 86 to tie for 24th, and Helias' Lauren Plunkett is in a tie for 45th with a 92.

St. Joseph's Academy leads a tight team race, as the top four schools are separated by just five shots, with a score of 354. Parkway West is second at 357, Warrensburg is third at 358 and Notre Dame de Sion is fourth at 359.

The tournament concludes today, with the first players teeing off at 8:30 a.m.

A Class 1 state title is within reach for School of the Osage's Taylor Hayes.

Competing at the Sedalia Country Club, Hayes posted a 77 to sit in fourth place at the two-day event, just five shots back of the leader, Westminster Christian's Jessica Dreesbeimdieke.

Among other area competitors, Russellville's Mikala Jungmeyer and Southern Boone's Hannah Muroski are tied for 22nd after shooting 91, Russellville's Kelsey Schrimpf is tied for 31st with a 93 and New Bloomfield's Brooke Kelly is tied for 43rd with a 99.

John Burroughs leads the team race with a 342, five shots clear of MICDS.

Action resumes at 8:30 a.m. today.
