Thieves break into Habitat for Humanity work trailer

October 17th, 2013 in News

Officials with River City Habitat for Humanity are asking for the public's help in trying to recover tools that were stolen from their work trailer sometime Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.

When workers went to the construction site in the 300 block of East Ashley Street Thursday morning, they found the trailer was open and the lock had been cut off.

"Some of the more expensive stuff was taken, like nail guns, a compressor, and a chop saw to cut lumber with," said Kelly Smith, Executive Director at River City Habitat for Humanity. "Unfortunately for us we have a budget and replacing a tool is not part of the budget."

Smith said they will call local businesses to consider donating tools.

"Anything that could have value was taken," she said. "We just had the ceremony to raise the walls Saturday at this location and will keep building as best as possible," she said. "Without these tools it will be a hardship. The majority of the people working on Habitat homes are volunteers, and we're still in good spirits. This is just a frustration."

Anyone who would be willing to help the group should call them at 635-8439.

"We have three houses currently under construction so getting these tools replaced is vital," Smith said. "The tools taken are estimated to be worth over $2,000 and for a non-profit like us that's a significant amount of money."
