Your Opinion: Fairness also must apply to taxpayers

Dear Editor:

The News Tribune recently published an editorial concerning conference center proposals. The concept of fairness was introduced.

Yes. Fairness to the two parties which submitted proposals is an important concern. Fairness to taxpayers is also a concern.

Will the meeting space be big enough? If it is not the taxpayers money might not be well spent. This would not be fair to taxpayers.

Will ongoing subsidy be required? It might be fair to taxpayers to seek proposals with zero ongoing tax subsidy.

I recommend to the council to create a new RFP process. Specify larger meeting space. Specify no ongoing subsidy or added costs. I suspect that there are legal and honorable pathways toward this end.

A larger meeting space with zero additional expenses would be most fair to the taxpayers.
