Your Opinion: Response to Garber on health care law

October 8th, 2013 by Doug Abbett, Jefferson City in News

Dear Editor:

This is a reply to Milton Garber's Oct. 5 letter about the Republicans fear of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

First you try to explain the gist of the act in a few short paragraphs. If it were only that easy. Remember Speaker Pelosi's famous quote, "We have to pass the health care bill so you can find out what's in it".

The ACA (Obamacare) is over 900 pages of law and no one in Congress would even admit to having read the entire bill before it was passed. The bill passed the House and Senate without a single Republican vote and only managed to get the 60 votes needed in the Senate by making deals with Sen. Ben Nelson (Nebraska Compromise) and Sen. Mary Landrieu (Louisiana Purchase). If the bill is so great why did the need to bribe two Democrat senators to get their votes?

Companies large and small are moving retirees from the companies' group health plan into the government-sponsored exchanges (What about the president saying "if you like your current plan, you can keep it." Did the administration not foresee companies abandoning their insurance plans in favor of the exchanges or is this all part of the plan?

In your final paragraph you seem a little confused about which party wants the government shut down, the Republican-led House has sent a number of bills to the Democrat-controlled Senate. These bills were not even considered in the Senate. The government could be running in all of its bloated glory if the Democrats would just admit that the ACA (Obamacare) is flawed (the administration has already given exemptions to a large number of business and labor groups). The Republicans just ask for a one year exemption for the rest of the country.
