Shooting report proves false alarm

At about 3 p.m. Thursday, Jefferson City police responded to what turned out to be a false call about a possible gunman at Berlin-Wheeler, 711 W. McCarty St.

According to the caller, he received a text message regarding a shooting in progress, and this information was relayed to police, who were on scene shortly thereafter.

Having only the single call and no further information indicating there was a shooter, for the safety of the employees and to rule out any possible issues, police established a perimeter and SWAT officers made entry to clear the business. Further reports obtained after all employees were accounted for indicated there was no shooting, nor any incident involving violence at the business.

After a brief investigation, it was determined that the information relayed to the 911 Communications Center was misinterpreted by the caller, which in turn led to the response.

No further investigation regarding the incident is pending.
