BizBeat: New retirement community to break ground

A new retirement community is ready to break ground in Jefferson City. A South Dakota-based company will have a ground-breaking ceremony Nov. 26 at 5408 Old Lohman Road.

Dylan Kessler, marketing specialist for Primrose Retirement Communities, said the company is ready and eager to get started.

Primrose Retirement Communities owns a property in Kansas City and 27 other locations in 15 states.

Although the business does not have any local ties to the community, Kessler said the company has been looking at the Capital City for quite a while. Its demographics and size were attractive enough. The company currently has three locations under construction, making Jefferson City its fourth. Construction will start Dec. 2. Kessler said Primrose will use local construction crews and hopes to build a relationship with the community from the start.

The company hopes to open the Jefferson City location by Christmas 2014 and is taking reservations immediately. The retirement center will include 36 independent living apartments and 46 assisted living apartments. Eight townhouses will also be built outside the central community center. Included in the amenities is a wellness center, pub and billiards room, a chapel, movie theater and business office. A 24-hour nurse will be available for the assisted living center and offer a varying degree of care. It will employ approximately 30 staff members and hire from within the community.

Primrose Retirement Community was started in its home-base of Aberdeen, S.D., in 1989 by Jim Thares.

"He recognized a need for something like this in the area, and Primrose has grown from there" Kessler said.

Thares set out to create a community which, according to the company website, was founded "based on the premise that a retirement community must reward its tenants with value, comfort, security, and convenience."

Its theme, "This is Living!" reflects its philosophy to provide a healthy and happy lifestyle for seniors.
