Council approves MSP agreement

November 8th, 2013 in News

The Jefferson City Council has approved an agreement with the state to provide funding for repairs and remediation at the old Missouri State Penitentiary.

At a special City Council meeting Thursday, council members approved a new use agreement, unveiled in an announcement Wednesday by Gov. Jay Nixon, which allows for the state and city to split the estimated $2 million cost of repairs and mold remediation at MSP.

Fifth Ward Councilman Ralph Bray recused himself from the vote because of a potential conflict of interest.

At the end of September, the CVB temporarily suspended all tours of the historic prison site, only to later announce the cancellation of all 2013 tours because of mold found at the site. CVB staff has been prohibited by the state from entering MSP buildings.

Officials have stated the goal is to reopen the prison in time for the 2014 tour season.
