Editor's Note: Additional championship details are available in this later coverage: Familiar formula leads Fatima to Class 3 state baseball crown
O'FALLON, Mo. - The Fatima baseball team put the cherry on top of the cake when it comes to this school year's athletic class at the high school.
The Comets capped off perhaps the most successful sports year at the school by capturing the Class 3 state baseball title, downing the Springfield Catholic Fightin' Irish 2-0 in eight innings.
Patrick Schnieders twirled a complete-game gem for the winners, allowing just six hits while striking out 11 and walking three.
Schnieders won a pitchers' duel with Tyler Ast, as he also went the distance, striking out five.
The Comets managed just five hits, with five players recording one each.
The Comets (23-5) and Fightin' Irish (23-5) were scoreless until Fatima got both its runs in the top of the eighth inning.
In that frame, Brady Weber led off with a bunt single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nolan Bax. Weber then scored on an RBI single by Reid Kesel, who later scored on a single by Seth Lehmen.
The baseball team's title matches the state title won by the school's volleyball team in the fall. During the winter, the boys basketball team went to the Final Four, eventually taking fourth.
It calls to mind the 1995-96 school year, when Fatima won a state title in softball, took fourth in the state in boys basketball and finished second in baseball.
