HOOVER, Ala. - The pitching was outstanding. But for the Missouri Tigers, the final result wasn't in their Southeastern Conference Tournament contest that went on into Wednesday morning.
Rob Zastryzny and Keaton Steele combined to allow just one run to Mississippi State through 16 innings before the Bulldogs got a run in the bottom of the 17th to top the Tigers 2-1.
The 17 innings is the longest game, which lasted four hours and 39 minutes, in Missouri history and ties for the longest in SEC history.
Zastryzny, in what likely was his final game at Missouri, worked the first nine innings. He allowed one earned run on seven hits and two walks while striking out seven. Steele then worked the next seven frames, scattering eight hits and striking out five.
Jake Walsh took the loss for Missouri, allowing a run on a hit and walk while recording two outs in the 17th.
Missouri, which finished with 11 hits, scored its run in the third. Brannon Champagne hit a one-out single before moving to second, then third, on a pair of wild pitches. He scored when the Bulldog catcher threw the ball away trying to catch Champagne at third.
Mississippi State scored in the fifth on a single by Hunter Renfroe.
In the 17th, Walsh allowed a leadoff walk and that was costly as Mitch Slauter hit a two-out single to bring home the game-winner.
Missouri ends its season at 18-32.
