A Jefferson City woman has been charged with arson and first-degree assault for attempting to set a fire at an apartment building this past weekend.

As of Monday afternoon, Brittany Phillips, 23, was being held without bond in the Cole County Jail.

A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement shows the incident happened Saturday in the 1400 block of Elizabeth Street.

After a disturbance that occurred earlier in the evening, Phillips began calling the victim and making verbal threats of harm over the phone.

She then came back to the victim's residence, where four adults and eight children were staying, and spread trash throughout a stairway.

Phillips was seen spraying the stairway and surrounding area with lighter fluid and attempting to ignite the fluid.

Philips fled the area, but was later apprehended by officers.

Correction: Brittany Phillips is not a paying resident in Broadmoor Apartments. She listed an Ellis Boulevard address at the apartment complex as her residence, which was reported in the original version of this article.
