Jays split at Kirksville

KIRKSVILLE - The Jefferson City Jays split a doubleheader Wednesday night against Kirksville, then spent more time in Kirksville than they bargained for.

The Jays lost the opener 6-3 before rebounding for a 7-5 win in the nightcap. That was followed by delay that lasted several hours in getting home after their bus broke down.

Travis Hennessy was the losing pitcher in the first game. Hayden Strobel had a two-run home run.

Bret Jaegers picked up the win in the second game as Corey Beard came on to get the save. Beard also hit a grand slam for the Jays (20-6), who open play in the Class 5 District 9 Tournament on Saturday at Vivion Field. The third-seeded Jays take on sixth-seeded Camdenton at 3:30 p.m. The winner gets second-seeded Helias on Monday.

Thursday's scheduled game against Holt was rained out.
