Worker dies in blender at Oregon meat plant

CLACKAMAS, Ore. (AP) - Oregon officials say a cleaning worker was killed Friday when he fell into a running meat blender at a Clackamas plant.

He was identified as 41-year-old Hugo Avalos-Chanon of Portland, who worked for DCS Sanitation Management.

KOIN reports he was cleaning equipment at Interstate Meat Distributors when he fell into a machine that blends meat. A co-worker hit an emergency stop button, but it was too late.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating. An OSHA report on the plant in February found machines were not locked during the tear-down process for cleaning.

Mesaros said the agency inspected DCS Sanitation Management's operations in 2001, 2002 and 2004, finding no violations.
