BizBeat: B.K Bakery taking a day of rest

You might have to stick with church doughnuts on Sundays - B.K. Bakery is making it a day of rest.

The Jefferson City pastry shop recently expanded, but has now decided to close on Sundays, owner Brandon Kelley said.

B.K. Bakery's signature item is its made-from-scratch cinnamon rolls. Last year, the business was nominated for "Small Business of the Year."

"We originally never had intentions of being open on Sunday, but decided to try it out of necessity," Kelley said in an e-mailed response to the News Tribune. He said the cost of being open exceeds sales on that day.

"My wife (Ida) and I were working seven days a week to keep our labor costs down, but it took a toll on us both," he said.

The business is still open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
