LU track athletes snag All-American honors

The Lincoln University track and field team had twelve athletes receive All-American honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association following last weekend's Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Birmingham, Ala.

The awards were officially handed out Tuesday.

Four Blue Tigers received multiple All-Americans including Latoya King on the women's side and Romel Lewis (6.66) on the men's side for their national title in the 60-meter dash. King finished in 7.38 while Lewis came in at 6.66.

King took third (23.46) in the 200-meter dash while Lewis was fourth (21.43) in the same event.

Lincoln's 4x400-meter relay team of Donna-Lee Hylton, Yanique Haye, Michelle Cumberbatch and Lovan Palmer took home the title. Hylton and Haye also took home honors in the 400-meter dash. Hylton came in fourth (54.60) while Cumberbatch was fifth (54.75).

Four others on the women's side took home honors including Anna-Kay James in the 60-meter hurdles (fourth, 8.37), Twishana Williams in the mile (seventh, 4:51.70), Sheri Kaye Campbell in the high jump (fourth, 1.73 meters), and Danielle Newman in the triple jump (seventh, 12.32 meters).

The Blue Tigers had two other men recognized. Sabiel Anderson finished second in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.65. That race ended in a photo finish. Jermaine Blake was sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:51.20.

The women finished second while the men took ninth.

Lincoln opens the outdoor season Saturday at the Central Methodist Open in Fayette.
