Bishop names 2 "interim directors' succeeding Novotney

Don Novotney is retiring June 30 as the Jefferson City Diocese's superintendent of Catholic Schools.

And Bishop John R. Gaydos announced Tuesday he has appointed two people to handle Novotney's duties on an interim basis - for up to two years, starting July 1.

Gaydos named the Rev. Joseph Corel, diocesan vocation director, as interim director of Catholic Schools, and Sister Kathleen Wegman, SSND, the diocesan chancellor, as interim assistant director of Catholic Schools.

The diocesan schools office oversees Catholic elementary schools in 35 central and northeastern Missouri cities.

It also oversees three high schools: Helias in Jefferson City, Father Tolton in Columbia and Sacred Heart High School in Sedalia.

Gaydos directed Corel and Wegman to work with the diocesan school and parish communities to create a diocesan board of education which, after its members are appointed and it's in operation, will participate in the search for a new superintendent and assistant superintendent of Catholic Schools.

Corel and Wegman will continue to serve in their current positions, with some of their duties reassigned.
