At NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala - A pair of University of Central Missouri track and field athletes were crowned national champions Saturday.

Brent Vogel and Erin Alewine each won individual titles at the NCAA DIvision II Indoor Track Championships.

Vogel (Helias High School) set a Division II record as he recorded 5,760 points in the heptathlon. He is the first Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association athlete to win the event.

Vogel, a senior, took first in the long jump (23-7 1/2), 1,000-meter run (2:33.44) and 60-meter hurdles (8.11). He was third in the 60-meter dash (7.10), fourth in the shot put (41-10 1/2), fifth in the high jump (6-6 1/4), sixth in the pole vault (14-1 1/4).

Vogel is the defending champion in the outdoor heptathlon.

Alewine (Jefferson City High School) took home the title in the pentathlon, finishing with 3,925 total points. She won two events, including the high jump (5-7 3/4) and the long jump (18-5 3/4).

The junior finished second in the 800-meter run (2:21.62), third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.78) and 12th in the shot put (33-10).

She also took home All-American honors in the high jump (seventh place) and the long jump (third place).
