Deadline nears for wetlands program in Mo.

March 2nd, 2013 in News

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Missouri landowners have until March 15 to apply for enrolling in the Wetlands Reserve Program.

Karen Brinkman, of the federal Natural Resources Conservation Service, says in a release that funding for this round of applications isn't guaranteed and could be limited.

The Wetlands Reserve Program is a voluntary program that gives landowners the opportunity to restore and enhance wetlands on their properties. The conservation service is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and provides technical and financial help to interested landowners.

Landowners receive cash in exchange for restoring or converting marginal agricultural land to shallow wetlands. The landowners also agree to maintain the new or restored wetlands.

The conservation service says the goal is to improve wetland functions and wildlife habitat on land enrolled in the program.
