Schmitz comes up short at Track and Field Championships

DES MOINES - It just wasn't meant to be for Vera Schmitz.

Schmitz, the former Vera Neuenswander, failed to make the opening height in the pole vault on her three attempts Sunday at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The former Jefferson City Lady Jay was unable to clear the bar set at 14 feet, 11⁄4 inches, ending up in a four-way tie for 11th, as three others also failed to make the opening height.

Jen Suhr ended up winning the event with a mark of 15-5. Kylie Hutson, second at 15-1, and Becky Holliday, third at 14-11, join her as the U.S. qualifiers for the World Championships set for August in Moscow.
