Fuse burning on last year to buy fireworks in JC

This is the last year for people to purchase fireworks within Jefferson City limits.

One stand is already preparing to open for sales in the area at Edgewood and Stadium, and is on one of two lots that are still able to legally sell fireworks. The majority of the city is already off-limits for fireworks, but when the area at Edgewood and Stadium was annexed into the city, they were given seven years to continue sales there.

That seven years was dependent on the annexation date of each lot. One lot in the area was annexed in 2005, meaning 2012 was the final year for fireworks sales on that lot. Two others near it were annexed in 2006, making this the final year for sales.

"The code is written so that they have seven years from the date of annexation," said city attorney Drew Hilpert. "This will be the last year for everyone."
