KANSAS CITY (AP) - The Kansas City Royals have signed first-round draft pick Hunter Dozier for $2.2 million.

The Royals signed the 6-foot-4 shortstop for $937,800 less than the allotted $3,117,800 for a No. 8 selection. The money can be used to sign other picks.

The 21-year-old Dozier led the Southland Conference with a .396 batting average, .755 slugging percentage, 25 doubles and 17 home runs for Stephen F. Austin University.

Dozier will leave Tuesday for the Royals' complex in Surprise, Ariz., for a minicamp. After that he will be assigned to the short-season Idaho Falls affiliate, which begins play June 20 in the Pioneer League.
