Monday's National League Capsules

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Erik Bedard allowed two hits over seven innings Monday night and the Pittsburgh Pirates opened a season-long 11-game homestand with a 4-0 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Bedard did not walk a batter and faced just one over the minimum, striking out five. He retired 17 in a row until his final batter, Paul Goldschmidt, singled. Goldschmidt was thrown out at second base trying to stretch the hit by left fielder Starling Marte.

Bedard (6-12) leads the majors in losses but lowered his home ERA to 2.38. Pittsburgh has won 23 of its past 29 games at PNC Park.

Jason Grilli and Chad Qualls each worked a perfect inning to preserve the shutout.

Andrew McCutchen had two hits and scored two runs for the Pirates.

Rookie Wade Miley (12-7) did not allow an earned run over six innings for Arizona, which has lost three in a row.

BREWERS 6, REDS 3

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Yovani Gallardo pitched seven innings, and Martin Maldonado homered and drove in three runs to help the Milwaukee Brewers beat Cincinnati.

Gallardo (10-8) gave up six hits, three walks and one run to equal his longest outing of the season and reach a double-digit win total for the fourth straight year.

Bronson Arroyo (7-7) gave up 10 hits, five walks and five runs in 5 1-3 innings, as the Reds lost for the second straight day after winning 15 of 16.

John Axford got his 18th save in 25 chances.

CARDINALS 8, GIANTS 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Jake Westbrook threw six solid innings and Carlos Beltran hit his 26th home run as the St. Louis Cardinals beat Matt Cain and the Giants.

The Cardinals have won four in a row overall and seven straight at home. San Francisco had a three-game winning streak stopped.

Jon Jay went 4 for 4 and drove in two runs for the Cardinals.

Angel Pagan led off the game with a home run and Buster Posey also connected for the Giants.

Westbrook (11-8) won his fourth decision in a row. Cain (10-5) tied a season high by giving up five earned runs in 5 2-3 innings.

BRAVES 6, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ben Sheets pitched into the eighth inning and Jason Heyward homered to lead the streaking Atlanta Braves over Philadelphia.

Sheets (4-1) had his longest outing since joining Atlanta's rotation on July 15 after missing all of last season due to Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. He allowed one run on seven hits while walking one and striking out none.

John Mayberry Jr. homered for the Phillies, who have lost seven straight to Atlanta.

Vance Worley (6-7) had his shortest outing of the season, lasting just 3 2-3 innings and giving up four runs on six hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

NATIONALS 5, ASTROS 4, 11 innings

HOUSTON (AP) - Roger Bernadina scored when Houston made two errors on the same play in the 11th inning and Washington picked up its third straight win.

Ryan Zimmerman had two hits and two RBIs, and Michael Morse added two hits for Washington.

Wilton Lopez (3-1) pitched a perfect 10th inning but Bernadina led off the 11th with a single. On Kurt Suzuki's bunt attempt, Brett Wallace and Lopez collided before Wallace threw the ball past first base and down the right field line. Right fielder Brian Bogusevic's throw home was too high, allowing Bernadina to score and give the Nationals a 5-4 lead.

Craig Stammen (5-1) pitched a perfect 10th and got a scare in the 11th when Chris Snyder just missed a home run down the left field line before striking out. Bogusevic walked and stole second but Jose Altuve grounded out to end the game.

Washington took a 4-1 lead in the fifth on a two-run single by Zimmerman followed by a run-scoring single by Morse.

Morse extended his hitting streak to 15 games.

PADRES 2, CUBS 0

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Eric Stults and four relievers combined on a five-hitter for San Diego.

Stults (2-2) allowed five hits as he pitched 5 1-3 innings in his first start since June 3. He struck out five and walked two.

Yonder Alonso and Everth Cabrera both drove in a run and the Padres won for the fourth time in 10 games. Chicago lost its sixth straight.

Brad Brach, Dale Thayer, Luke Gregerson and Huston Street combined for 3 2-3 innings of no-hit relief, finished San Diego's seventh shutout. Street pitched the ninth for his 19th save.

Travis Wood (4-8) allowed two runs and five hits over six innings. The left-hander struck out three and walked three.

ROCKIES 2, DODGERS 0

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Colorado's Adam Ottavino gave up one hit in three innings of relief, a single that was the result of a reversed call.

Ottavino (3-1) took over in the fifth inning for a tiring Drew Pomeranz, who allowed three hits and walked three while striking out seven.

Carlos Gonzalez had a sacrifice fly in the first inning and rookie Jordan Pacheco added an RBI single in the third for the Rockies.

Rockies manager Jim Tracy was ejected by third base umpire and crew chief Mike Everitt in the bottom of the seventh when he slammed his cap to the ground following the reversal of a call on a sinking liner by Shane Victorino which was first ruled an out. TV replays showed center fielder Dexter Fowler trapped the ball.

Rafael Betancourt pitched a perfect ninth for his 18th save in 22 chances.

Dodgers left-hander Chris Capuano (10-8) allowed two runs and nine hits in seven innings and struck out seven.
