Local woman shares experience as human trafficking victim

"I had fear immediately'

Every two minutes, a child is forced into sex trafficking, according to the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, UNICEF.

"I think most of the time people think sex trafficking is something that happens in another country," said Sula Skiles, a former victim of sex trafficking who now lives in Jefferson City. "But, actually the United States is one of the top three nations where sex trafficking occurs."

Human trafficking involves an act of recruiting, transporting, transferring, harboring or receiving a person through a use of force, coercion or other means, for the purpose of exploiting them, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
