Brewing up tales of Capital City's past

Walter A. Schroeder, author of "Breweries and Saloons in Jefferson City, Missouri," will discuss the Capital City's beer-related history at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Missouri River Regional Library.

Schroeder is a retired University of Missouri geography professor and author of several books and articles.

He became interested in the city's beer-related history when he realized nothing else had been written on the subject. The grandson of German immigrants, he grew up in Jefferson City, one block from Capitol Brewery. The brewery, which ceased operation in 1947, was in the 100 block of West Dunklin Street.

"Breweries and Saloons in Jefferson City, Missouri" was sponsored by the Old Munichburg Association. As research, Schroeder read old German newspapers and interviewed Jefferson City residents for their oral histories of the time.

"I found that not many people ever read those German newspapers about what the Germans in Jefferson City thought about the city," Schroeder said. "Most people who did history had read over the English newspapers.
