Your Opinion: "Flag pole' tower not controlled by club

January 7th, 2013 by Tim Sigmund, vice president Boys and Girls Club of Capital City in News

Dear Editor:

Shortly before the holiday, Dale Walker expressed his disappointment that a number of private and public buildings had failed to lower their flags to half-staff in memory of the victims of the Newtown, Conn., shooting.

He was particularly concerned about the flag adjacent to the Boys and Girls Club of the Capital City since that organization serves the youth of the Jefferson City area. In fact, the Boys and Girls Club does not own the flag pole or the property on which it sits and, therefore, has no control over it.

The "flag pole" is actually a telecommunications tower owned by a private party. It is understandable that Walker would surmise that the pole is the property of the Boys and Girls Club, as many other people have thought similarly in the past.

For those who have issues with either the pole/tower or the flag flying from it, please understand that the Boys and Girls club is not in control of either.
