Westminster women claim spot in NCAA D-III tourney

FULTON - The Westminster Blue Jays wrapped up a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament with a 71-55 win Sunday against Webster University in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletics Association championship game.

Leigh Ann Lutz (California High School), the tournament's Most Valuable Player, dropped in 27 points to lead Westminster to the win. The junior drilled seven 3-pointers, with the first one setting the school's single-season record with 67.

The effort also helped Lutz join the school's 1,000-point club, becoming just the seventh Blue Jay to do so. Amy Schaeperkoetter, who played for Westminster from 1994-98, leads the scoring list with 1,282 points.

The Blue Jays, who will find out their first-round opponent for nationals today, led the game 29-23 at halftime.

On Saturday, Westminster moved into the title game by posting a 77-70 win over Spalding University. Lutz had 17 points in the victory.
