Bill would make filing gun legislation a crime

Missouri House Rep. Mike Leara, R-St. Louis, filed a bill Monday evening that would make it a Class D felony for any member of the General Assembly to propose legislation that further restricts an individual's right to bear arms.

The bill is in response to recent proposed gun legislation, including a bill filed by Rep. Rory Ellinger, D-University City, that seeks to make it a Class C felony to manufacture, import, possess, purchase, sell or transfer any assault weapon or large capacity magazine.

Leara said he filed his bill, House Bill 633, as a matter of principle and as a statement in defense of the Second Amendment rights of Missourians.

"I have no illusions about the bill making it through the legislative process, but I want it to be clear that the Missouri House will stand in defense of the people's constitutional right to keep and bear arms," Leara said.
