Two Boy Scout leaders receive District Award of Merit

Two adult Boy Scout leaders recently received the District Award of Merit during the Five Rivers District Dinner.

Gary Berendsen and Tim Schwarz, both of Jefferson City, were recognized for extraordinary service to Scouting, their communities and the district over an extended period of time.

The District Award of Merit is the highest award the district can bestow on a volunteer.

Berendsen is an assistant scoutmaster for Troop 2. He has been active in the troop for approximately 20 years and has attended summer camp for 15 years. Berendsen, a retired fireman, has served on several camporee staffs and also is active in his church.

Schwarz is an assistant scoutmaster with Troop 1. He has been active in Scouting for 16 years and has served Cub Scout and Boy Scout units.

Schwarz is a member of the district committee and is involved in various district activities.

Two men also received the district's Sparkplug Award.

Doug Dunn, assistant scout- master from Troop 2, and Scott Jobe, scoutmaster of California's Troop 120, were honored for their "spark" that makes things happen in their units. David Harris of Jefferson City was recognized for 50 years of service to the Boy Scouts.

Ed Kniest was named the district's Commissioner of the Year.
