Fired Columbia officer gets his police dog back

February 14th, 2013 in News

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - A Columbia police officer who was fired has been reunited with the police dog that was his partner on the force.

When officer Ron Sanders was fired for excessive force in 2011, the Columbia City Council refused to let him buy the dog, named Fano.

The Columbia Missourian reports ( private citizens raised more than $10,000 to help Sanders buy the dog but the city said Fano still had a future as a police dog.

Fano was sold to the Clarence police department for $1 but was too aggressive for the small town. Another officer bought the dog and brought him back to Sanders on Monday.

Dale Roberts, executive director of the Columbia Police Officers' Association, says Sanders was the only human Fano ever bonded with.
