Your Opinion: Reaction to keychain gun in school

Dear Editor:

Good grief. Let me see, a third grader brings a keychain that has a toy gun attached to it, is showing it to his friends (proud of his birthday present), gets suspended for three days.

Is there any common sense left anywhere? I'm referring to the teacher and principal. Okay so he was "pointing" at his friend. Does that justify his punishment? I'm sure the little guy was very upset, heck I'm upset and I don't know them, but someone has to stand and call this for what it is. What about just taking the keychain/gun from him till after school?

Mr. Luther said that "whenever you have someone bring something that can be perceived as a weapon, it can cause alarm." If this toy rises to the level of being "perceived" as a weapon we are doomed and God help us all.
