Learning is a lifelong process.
Formal, classroom education typically occupies our earlier years, but learning continues whenever we experience situations, visit places and share with other people.
Perpetuating the joy of learning is at the heart of Learning in Retirement, an organization that offers trips, classes and clubs.
A preview of what the group is planning for its members in 2014 was included in our Active Times publication in December. The scheduled includes:
• Trips: Day-long excursions will take travelers to theater productions and museums around Missouri, to Versailles' Mennonite community and a cruise on the Lake of the Ozarks. In addition, Alabama will be the focal point of a four-day trip in May.
• Classes: Courses will explore topics including: The Holocaust; the American West; historic preservation and geology; development of dance; the fiddle/violin in early Missouri; current events; and dog show judging. In addition, a film series will concentrate on movies dealing with World War I.
• Clubs: A new genealogy club will join the existing lineup of eight other clubs: Bocce ball, books, bridge, creative writing, dominoes, pinochle, scrabble and walking/hiking.
Prospective members are invited to a Winter Membership Meeting on Jan. 22 at Knights of Columbus Hall, St. Martins. Registration begins at 12:45 p.m., with the meeting at 1:30 p.m.

The prospect of retirement can evoke mixed emotions. Some people eagerly anticipate having time to pursue their interests; other fear potential isolation and boredom.
Learning in Retirement provides opportunities to travel, to learn and to experience. More important, however, it provides opportunities to share.
And sharing, like learning, never gets old.
