Dear Editor:
My community is the Lohman, Russellville, Enon and Corticelli area.
Some landmarks you will see in my community include the majestic St Paul's Lutheran Church perched in a picturesque setting high on a hill in Lohman or the beautiful white Enon Baptist Church nestled in the heart of Enon.
In downtown Russellville, you will see a caboose fully refurbished as well as restored buildings with street lights that will bring you back to an era gone by.
In Corticelli, amid the rolling hills of pasture, you will come across the beautiful Corticelli Baptist Church.
However, something that is not visible to the naked eye are the people in my community; my friends and neighbors that donate their lives to protecting and serving the public. These are the people who jump out of their comfortable and cozy beds in the middle of the night; the people who leave their children's ball games, school events, birthday parties, family gatherings, World Series and Super Bowl parties at the sound of a single phone call.
It is the call that you or I make needing help because our homes are on fire or we were involved in a car accident. And they respond. They respond regardless of the weather conditions Mother Nature throws at them. They respond in the bone chilling cold of winter and the sweat drenching days of summer. They respond in snowstorms, ice storms and thunderstorms. They even camp out on cots in the fire stations on days and nights when Mother Nature is threatening Her worst; just in case there is a call.
These individuals are the volunteer firefighters of the Russellville-Lohman Fire Protection District; the unsung heroes in my community.
If you live in any rural area, you have a group of unsung heroes in your community too. These heroes are strictly volunteers. They are not paid for what they do. This elite group of individuals sacrifices unselfishly and unconditionally to make sure that one's property is protected and we are safe. Not only do they respond to 911 calls but they also complete numerous hours of training every month and maintain equipment. These individuals donate so much of themselves to our communities. They are unrelenting.
Please take time to thank these individuals for the sacrifices they make.
