A Fulton woman will go on trial next week for the random beating and robbery of a shopper leaving Walmart.
Pamela Carter, 58, will begin her trial 9 a.m. Dec. 10, in the Callaway County Courthouse. She is charged with two counts of first degree assault with serious physical injury, first degree robbery and misdemeanor unlawful use of drug paraphernalia stemming from an October 2012 incident that left Sara L. Spencer, 53, of Fulton, in serious condition at a Columbia hospital.
Callaway County Prosecuting Attorney Chris Wilson said that Carter faces 10-30 years in prison for each of the Class A felonies. A St. Charles County jury will hear the trial.
Law enforcement officers found Spencer around 10:30 a.m. Oct. 6, 2012, face down in a ditch along County Road 210.
Fulton Police said Carter was arrested three days later for the assault after surveillance footage showed Carter had followed Spencer to her car from the Fulton Walmart parking lot as Spencer left the store.
Officers believe Carter forced Spencer to drive her vehicle to her bank and withdraw money from the ATM before assaulting her and dumping her off the road.
After the arrest, FPD Maj. Roger Rice said "we believe there was no previous connection between the two women. The suspect was waiting for the right victim. The video shows they actually passed each other and there was no recognition between them and they did not speak... The motive was clearly robbery."
