Off-duty officer shoots, kills KC firefighter

KANSAS CITY (AP) - Authorities say an off-duty police officer has shot and killed a firefighter hours after the firefighter's wedding.

Kansas City Fire Department spokesman James Garrett has confirmed that six-year veteran firefighter Anthony Bruno was shot about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Kansas City police said the officer who shot him was in uniform but working another job off-duty when he responded to a reported assault on a cab driver. Police said that the officer was attacked when he approached the suspect.

Police said the officer told investigators he feared for his life when he shot Bruno. The officer has been admitted into a hospital with serious injuries.

Garrett says Fire Chief Paul Berardi had been with Bruno's family since the shooting. Police are investigating.
