The kickoff of the state's charitable campaign launches yet another contribution to our community by state employees.
As Jefferson City's single-largest employer, state government is an economic engine for our community. State workers who shop locally support local commerce, which creates jobs, and contribute to our tax base.
State employees also provide a range of services in agriculture, health, education, economic development and more - not only here, but statewide.
The 29th annual Missouri State Employees Charitable Campaign began Wednesday and continues through November.
Although charities across the state and nation participate, a number of state employees traditionally have contributed to Central Missouri agencies and organizations.
"For many years, the Missouri State Employees Charitable Campaign has provided a unified fundraising campaign for state employees to easily show their support, generosity and compassion for others," Commissioner of Administration Doug Nelson said at the kickoff. "Last year, state employees donated more than $1 million to various charities across the state and nation. We hope to continue with a record number of donations this year."
Included in this year's campaign is an online auction of a children's playhouse constructed by the River City Habitat for Humanity. The auction will continue through Sept. 30 with proceeds benefiting the area Habitat chapter.
State employees have contributed more than $25 million to charitable efforts during the past 28 years. The numbers represent donations from nearly 8,000 state workers.
We commend state employees for generously aiding fellow Missourians in need and for improving communities statewide.
