Your Opinion: Apologize and move on

August 15th, 2013 by Donna Bernskoetter, Jefferson City in News

Dear Editor:

This letter is in regard to all the uproar over the clown at the State Fair who was dressed as Obama and asked the crowd if they wanted to see Obama run over by a bull.

Sure, that action was very inappropriate, and the clown should have realized that there would be many Obama supporters in the audience - but to suggest reprimands like the ones suggested in the article, "State Fair bans rodeo clown who mocked Obama" is extremely overreacting.

Fair Marketing Director Tammie Nichols said the clown was hired by the Missouri Rodeo Cowboy Association, but fair officials did not know he was going to mock Obama. We can't blame the Rodeo Association either. This is one clown in the association. And why would we want to punish all those associated with organizing our amazing State Fair?

Everyone makes mistakes - we are human. I would certainly ask for a public apology from the clown for his "bad taste" behavior, and then go on with life. To suggest financial consequences - tax dollars be pulled from the State Fair - or that Gov. Nixon should cancel the annual ham breakfast is absurd. Thank goodness Nixon didn't agree with that suggestion.

The clown's lifetime banishment from participating in the State Fair is enough punishment. Think of that - lifetime ban.

Let's remember Jesus Christ's words, "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

Let's get an apology from the clown and drop it. It's time to concentrate on issues that are vastly more important!
