Your Opinion: Celebrating Missouri and state's quarter

August 14th, 2013 by Bill Stine, Jefferson City in News

Dear Editor:

Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah! It was Missouri's and our state quarter's birthday Saturday.

It was fun to explain a little bit of Missouri and our coin history to visitors from Ozark, Marshall, Westphalia Gerald, and Kansas City. I also took a few photos of their visit to the Lewis & Clark monument on this very special day in Missouri history.

First, it was on Aug. 10, 1821, that Missouri became a state.

Then, at the Missouri State Fair arena 10 years ago, we were there when the Missouri Corps of Discovery Quarter was unveiled on Aug. 10, 2003.

Audience members got two Missouri quarters in a souvenir plastic case as a gift from Gov. and Mrs. Holden and the US Mint. I still have mine!

Today, it is good to know that this Missouri quarter is the only one in the U.S. Mint's state quarter design program to incorporate the Lewis & Clark theme. That far outweighs some comments and initial controversy when the coin designer's interpretation of the winning Missouri artist's design made the news in 2003.
