Big Brothers, Big Sisters recruiting mentors

The Missouri Valley Big Brothers Big Sisters is kicking off a campaign to recruit more mentors to ensure every child on the agency's waiting list has someone to make a positive impact in their lives.

The 60 Bigs in 60 Days Campaign kicks off with an event at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 22 at the Hawthorn Bank Community Room, 3600 Amazonas Drive. Attendees can learn more about Big Brothers Big Sisters and how they can help a child in need of a mentor in the community.

According to a study conducted by Public Private Ventures, children who have a mentor in their life are 46 percent less likely to start using drugs, 27 percent less likely to consume alcohol, 52 percent less likely than their peers to skip a day of school and 30 percent less likely to engage in violent behavior.

Missouri Valley Big Brothers Big Sisters serves more than 250 children a year and has more than 120 active matches, but nearly 60 kids are still waiting for a Big Brother or a Big Sister in the community.

The event is free and open to public. Lunch is provided. RSVP is encouraged, but not required. Call 573-634-3290.
