Jim Lewis Tire expanding size of building

Among over 35 building permits issued in July

Jim Lewis Tire & Wheel has started an expansion project in Jefferson City that has been planned over the last few years.

It recently broke ground for a project that will replace its 3,600-square-foot building with one twice that size behind the current location, which will be razed. The new business, which could open around Dec. 1, will increase the number of work bays from four to 11.

The business, located at 1300 Missouri Blvd., has operated under the name since 1982. It started by repairing/replacing tires and doing alignments, but as the scope of the business' work has grown, so has its need for expansion.

"We've needed to grow for a long time," co-owner Phil LePage said. "We're very blessed with the customer base that we do have. To maintain a good working relationship with our customers, we want to expand."

Over the years, Jim Lewis has diversified into "all kinds of mechanical" work ranging from work on vehicle air conditioners, struts, shocks, brakes, hoses, radiators and window motors. About the only thing they don't do is transmission work, although they do preventative maintenance including transmission flushes, LePage said.

Several years ago, LePage said the business started purchasing houses behind them, eventually buying and tearing down three. That's the location for the new building. Their current building has served several businesses, including a gas station, transmission shop and liquor store.

With the expansion, Jim Lewis eventually will add positions to its staff, LePage said.

He said the expansion won't add new services, but will allow the business to take care of customers quicker with its current array of services.

The city recently approved a building permit for the project, listed at a cost of $408,983.
