Shoe collection to benefit Haitians

Nearly 4,200 pounds of shoes have been collected to benefit children in Mare Blanche, Haiti.

Hope for Caribbean Kids Inc. collected the shoes Wednesday in Jefferson City from StorageMart in partnership with the Shoeman Water Project, based in Fenton.

The collection will provide funds to drill a well for people in the southern mountains of Haiti. Hurricanes Isaac and Sandy damaged their school, church, crops, homes and livestock. And the area only recently was relieved of a severe drought.

In addition to the shoe collection, which will be ongoing, Hope for Caribbean Kids Inc. will host its seventh 5K Walk-Run for Haiti on June 1 at 3200 W. Edgewood Drive and Bowling for Haiti on Sept. 28 at Westgate Lanes.

The public may drop off pairs of new or used shoes of any size and style, without holes in the bottom, at StorageMart, 2420 St. Marys Blvd.
