Retired greyhounds racing to find a home

April 27th, 2013 in News

The Rescued Racers organization is hosting a meet and greet with 15 retired racing greyhounds from 9 a.m.-noon today in Jefferson City at the Westside Veterinary Clinic, 4736 Country Club Drive.

Some of the greyhounds at the event will be up for adoption through an application process.

The Rescued Racers Organization, based in St. Louis, rescues greyhounds across the state, whether ill, injured or a senior dog. The organization keeps the canines in foster homes for as long as it takes to find a permanent home, easing the dogs' transition from professional athlete to a family pet.

"After they (greyhounds) finish their racing careers, if owners don't turn them over to adoption organizations like us, a lot of times they put them down," said Leann Zalasky, director of Rescued Racers. "There has to be rescue groups so they have somewhere to go."
