Dear Editor:
My oldest son recently turned 11. For nine of those years we have lived with his diagnosis on the autism spectrum. With that diagnosis comes a lifetime struggle to search out and fight for every opportunity for your child.
My question is this: Why do we have to search? Why is this information not shouted from the roof tops? I've often wondered this and after reading a recent article in "HER" magazine and discovering a skating group I just can't get this thought out of my head. This group is celebrating its 10th year. This is the first I've ever heard of it. My son doesn't like to skate but maybe he would have had he had the opportunity earlier. Maybe he would have friends. There was a boy his age, from our area, featured in that article.
Now I'm trying to send him to Camp Wonderland before he enters middle school next year and no where can I find help with the $585 camp fee. Where is this help? Why is there such a stigma attached to autism still? I know I'm not the only one who wonders this.
