Homeowner fires shot to scare off salesmen

The Cole County Sheriff's Department is not seeking charges against a homeowner who shot his handgun into the air, thinking a door-to-door salesman was about to enter his home without his consent.

Deputies on Monday were called to a disturbance at a residence in the 6800 block of Route B where vacuum cleaner salesmen were attempting to sell the homeowner a vacuum.

The salesmen kept banging on the front door while the homeowner called 911 to complain. After the homeowner opened the door, the salesmen gave him a free gift and wanted to show him a vacuum. The homeowner said he didn't want one and asked the salesmen to leave three times.

The homeowner kept the gift and when one of the salesmen opened the door of the residence, the homeowner stuck a handgun out the front door and fired a shot into the air, believing the salesmen were going to come into his home without his consent.
