Calvary takes fifth in own tournament

Calvary Lutheran took fifth place in its own tournament over the weekend with a 2-1 record.

The Lions opened up play Friday with a 13-3 loss to the Mexico JV team. The defeat sent Calvary to the loser's bracket.

Wyatt Archer went 2-for-3 and Gavin Nutt went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Bradley MacLaughlin was the losing pitcher.

Calvary rebounded Saturday with a 16-0 victory over Green Ridge in five innings.

Cole Duenckel went 3-for-4 with three RBI, while MacLaughlin went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Archer was the winning pitcher, allowing three hits over five innings.

Calvary then defeated Northwest: Hughesville 5-4 in the fifth-place game later Saturday.

MacLaughlin recorded the game-winning, walk-off hit in the bottom of the sixth inning. Only six innings were played to keep within the tournament's two-hour time limit.

Tucker Ulveling collected a hit and two RBI in the game. Beau Monson was the winning pitcher, allowing an unearned run on one hit in three innings of relief.

Calvary (4-5) hosts Newburg today.
